Live bank rates for Egypt, on every screen

In Egypt the exchange rate is a different number at every bank, and it moves all day. One reliable place to compare what the banks are actually paying — on iOS, Android and web, live since February 2023.

  • Every tracked currency at a glance, each card led by the day's highest-buying bank.
  • One currency, every bank that quotes it — twenty rows deep for the US dollar alone, sortable, each with its own trend arrow.
  • A working converter, not a static table: enter an amount and see who is actually paying the most for it today.
  • The same grid, fully mirrored. Arabic is not a translated afterthought here either.

In Egypt the exchange rate is not one number. It is a different number at every bank, it moves during the day, and for a lot of people it is the difference between a decision made well and a decision made on a rumour.

Egypt Exchange Rate is one place to see all of it.

A rate engine first, an app second

The visible part is a list of banks. The part that decides whether anyone trusts it is underneath: a rate engine that collects, reconciles and serves the numbers, and knows the difference between a rate that has genuinely moved and a source that has simply gone quiet.

Buy and sell across the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, CIB, ADIB and others, covering the US dollar, the euro, sterling, the Saudi riyal, the Kuwaiti dinar and the UAE dirham.

A rate that is stale and looks current is worse than no rate at all. That is the constraint the whole thing is designed around.

Three platforms, one codebase

iOS, Android and web, shipped together. One codebase where that genuinely helps, which here it does: the screens are the same screens, and the thing that must not diverge between them is the number.

Arabic first, not translated afterwards

Both languages are complete, and Arabic is full right-to-left: mirrored layout, logical properties, its own type stack. That is the difference between an app an Arabic speaker can use and one they can merely read.

Numerals are their own problem in an app about numbers, and a currency figure has to stay readable in a right-to-left line without the sign migrating to the wrong end of it.

Every bank, not just the big ones

The list looks simple, but a single currency is quoted by close to twenty banks at once on the live site, ranked by whoever is paying the most that day, each with its own trend arrow. A working converter turns that list into an actual number for the amount someone is holding, rather than a table they have to do the arithmetic on themselves.

More currencies are tracked than any one traveller needs, because the point was never to answer one person's question. It was to be the page every one of those questions lands on.

What it proves

It has been live since February 2023, which is a longer commitment than a portfolio piece.
